‘Why do I want to buy shades?’ – is the question I was once very prone to ask myself. But this was before my encounter with the sunglasses salesman in a large store in a large mall in Delhi. My wife and I were at the shades counter there and I was looking wistfully at the displays.
‘You’ve been thinking of buying a sunshade for yourself for quite a while now,’ said my wife, and egged me to try a few that I liked.
‘Should I?’ I questioned with a doubt creeping in, as I had never worn one in the past years, ‘Hope I don’t go on and spend money on something I’d never wear.’
‘Try this one, sir.’ This was the voice of the salesman there who had smelled a sale and pounced on us at the right moment.
I did. He immediately handed me another one, as if the earlier one needed to be taken off before any of the other customers fainted on seeing me. Then he showed me another one. And then yet another one, and he probably wanted me to decide on one fast before I looked at myself in the mirror and decided against buying one at all. This was quite fast and, with a flick of my wrist I indicated him to stop this blitz.
‘No,’ I mumbled to myself, and then carefully looked at all the seemingly wonderful sunshades displayed. The posters showed smart people wearing one or another and surrounded by beautiful girls. Before I could get lost in another of my reveries, I picked one and turned to my wife, ‘I like this.’
‘Try it on,’ she simply said.
I did… and then noticed a distinct and clearly undisguised smile on the salesman’s face that was shouting loudly enough, ‘Ha! This guy is looking like a smuggler in them. But what do I care?’
‘You said something?’ I asked him.
‘No, sir,’ he replied and kept discretely quiet.
This was when I looked into the mirror and what I saw was what made me walk out of the store immediately with a million reasons convincing me why I wouldn’t want to buy a sunshade for myself.
But today, after trying out a few shades on the gkb website, I am back to asking myself: ‘Which of these suits me better?’
In fact I’ve gone a step ahead and have even classified all sun-glasses into five categories. It was a little game I was playing with myself… but we’ll talk of this classification later in the article. It is time now for me to tell you about the two shades that I have chosen from the huge collection that the gkb website has.
The Radicals
We’re living in times when thoughts need to begin looking in a new direction. The conventional phase has already had a long run and now needs a break… this is probably the only solution we have to break-through the set patterns that may have stilted growth that we so desperately need. It is time, therefore, to be ‘The Radicals’ and simply radiate that through your presence!
It is time also for couples to go forth as a team and win all battles! No wonder I was fascinated the moment I reached this model – the D&G DD 8066. The website describes this model as one that is ‘always stylish and gives a perfect blend of functionality and design. ‘They also go further to say that this one simply ‘is perfectly in tune with its youthful, innovative, and anti-conventional spirit.’ Yes, even I, who is a 50-something spirited fellow, had no choice but to agree with this.
The picture below is ample proof that the ‘innovative and anti-conventional’ trend looks simply great on anyone. And let me share another secret with you… if you’re the sort who finds difficult changing or modifying attitudes, start with changing your looks and the way you stand or smile or talk or walk. The tenets of ‘body language’ also ask you to re-tune what you can see if you wish to re-structure the person within you that you cannot see! Got it?
I’d say it is a good idea to opt this kind of sun-shades, wear bold colours, smile more often, be and work in tandem with your partner, and you’ll be a changed person in no time! I would always wear it on me when the daylight demands and discretely twiddle it and play with it even when I’m not wearing it. I’d prefer my partner to perch it on her head when it isn’t balanced perfectly on her nose bridge! The mantra here is ‘visibility’… let your symbol of radicalism be visible to you as well to others…
The Adventurers
If you’re the sort who wouldn’t balk from climbing a few hundred feet of a steep incline that compels you to drag yourself upwards by clinging and pulling the jutting roots there, then you’re actually qualified to wear the RAY-BAN RB 2140. Stand on the top deck of ferries to watch flying fish and dolphins and if you’re wearing these shades I wouldn’t be surprised if a few of the wonderful sea creatures stop and stare at you and even say aloud: ‘Now this is a real explorer and I’d love to be held by him!’
Well, this shell sun-glass would surely convert you into a unique brand and you’d simply stand out! I believe that when you’re wearing the right sun-glasses you simply adopt the right look… and this one will give you that charming look of calmness even when the seas are choppy, make you look like the one who’d take yet another determined step when everyone else would have tamely quit, give you the aura of a leader.
I thought it was great to visualise both my wife and me giving this adventurous look… and in the pic we were actually fascinated by all the flying fish and the dolphins when we were on our way to Havelock Island in Andaman. I’d prefer my wife to carry this in the not-so-deep front pocket of her Hidesign or Kara handbag so that a crucial part is always visible and can easily be taken out to slip on at the right moment! I’d myself prefer to carry it in a soft leather pouch that can be buttoned on the outside of my denim jeans right pocket. A Ray Ban Wayfarer that softly touches your outer thigh and gives you a feeling of being an unbeatable adventurer!
Now that I’ve already told you how a ‘mere’ sun-shade can alter the essence of your life, let me also tell you a bit about the classification that I was talking about.
This classification is based on five different quotes and tells about the five kind of people who possess the best and the most expensive glasses. I’ll just give you the titles and the quote that I associate with it. I leave the interpretation to you entirely:
BigG and fain-ity struck
Some movie stars wear their sunglasses even in church. They’re afraid God might recognize them and ask for autographs.
Fred Allen
Creators who show-case
My sunglasses are like my guitar.
Patti Smith
Rich-ly deserving
Being stuck in airports, you always end up buying perfume and sunglasses.
Lexa Doig
Creators who just create
The only reason we wore sunglasses onstage was because we couldn’t stand the sight of the audience.
John Cale
The dream seekers
With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 60.
Jack Nicholson
You’re one of them? Great! If not, have one of your choice and join the party!
