Let me begin by saying that I simply do not agree with Carl Jung when he pronounced that a beautiful woman is ‘a source of terror’ and ‘a terrible disappointment’. Though I’m unsure if he chose to call them a terror because of the time and money involved and a disappointment because most would end up looking exactly what they looked like in the first place. Even the dictionary seems to meander into definitions that aren’t too distinctive as they call ‘someone attractive in a delicate way’ as pretty and go on to hail beautiful as something or someone pleasing the senses or mind aesthetically. ‘Where will a word like charming fit in,’ I mumble as I try to discover the exact slot for the existence of so many brands of cosmetics selling all over the world. The truth is that I have always found beauty within a person than under thick layers of a foundation.
What a woman utters and how and when is what sends out positive vibes. The way a woman interacts with people matters. Insights aren’t things that can be bought off a store shelf but come with increased awareness of the surroundings and burning issues, openness to mingle and not be content in a segregated sort of existence, and probably a lot of travel. Even a freckled skin wouldn’t deter me from calling a woman charming or pretty if her words and attitude help me find a calm spot within me, so to say. But yet, many brands in the realm of cosmetic manufacturing sell products all over the world. So there must be something that I am missing in my observations.
A chance meeting with Mr. Dhruva Chandrie, Chief Operating Officer of Shop CJ made me ask him if he knew any secrets for the popularity of cosmetics. He went on to mention that cosmetics were indeed doing a great service provided they were the right sort and came from the right source. He talked about cosmetics providing radiance, anti-ageing, pore-tightening and moisturizing properties and the way they allowed the skin to remain fresh and young even when the skin was ready to look older. ‘Cosmetics need to be like Korean beauty products that are technologically advanced, heavily researched and tested products with excellent results on all types of skin,’ he said with a twinkle in his eyes. He even went on to show me a face cream that is loaded with benefits for all types of skin and is available for Rs.1099/- through online and offline channel of the home shopping network.
‘Aha!’ was all I could actually say in response, and added, ‘that’s it?’
‘No, this is just the start,’ he replied, ‘In India, we bring the finest of Korean beauty products with proven benefits and have made it available at Shop CJ prices. BB cream is just the start. We are very positive about acceptance of Korean cosmetic products in India.’
So I guess when people talk of excellent results in the world of cosmetics, what they are really pointing out is the all the technology that goes into the creation of a product to make it safe for the skin. I mean, no one wants to end up with burn marks and blisters on the skin. No one wants allergies. No one wants any more blemishes than are already there as a result of the genetic mix that may have gone into the chromosomal make-up of a person. So I did smile and told him about a recent quote of P T Barnum that I had read: ‘A lovely nook of forest scenery, or a grand rock, like a beautiful woman, depends for much of its attractiveness upon the attendance sense of freedom from whatever is low; upon a sense of purity and of romance.’
It was as I read out this quote that even I realised that beauty after all is also about the intrinsic sense of freedom in a woman… and repression of any kind, including the freedom to go out and buy cosmetics, might have rather ugly results. So I concluded that being beautiful and pretty and charming is all about a woman able to express her freedom by wanting to or not wanting to buy and use cosmetics and being able to do it.
