Storing stuff is both good as well as bad. If you’re the sort who has Indian currency of 1000 and 500 rupee notes, you’re obviously in for a lot of stress and there is still no technology currently available that will help you do it in ways to enable you to retrieve them in a usable format. But if you have documents, pictures, and videos that you wish to keep forever, this new ban shouldn’t make you an insomniac at all. How long should you store your paystubs? Find out here. We are living in times when storing safely has acquired a new definition and even portable storage isn’t going to label you as an economic offender. Now if you have files that you wish to be destroyed because they are private, then consider going to this local paper shredding services.
I remember meeting friends who told me that they had a million things to store and at least some were in a digital format. ‘Some are secrets that I do not wish to display publicly,’ he said, ‘but the common fact is that all this digitized stuff is vital and I cannot afford to lose any.’
‘Even the prying eyes of the government?’ I asked with a bit of apprehension.
He said, ‘Well, some of them would surely attract the plagiarist or the thieves who love stealing words and pictures. I want a safety cover from them all.’
I guess this friend was the right sort of person to be using the new WD® products that have recently been launched in 1TB, 2 TB & 4TB capacity. ‘These Passport portable hard drives,’ I said with a smile, ‘are password protected with 256-bit AES hardware encryption. And the backup software that they come loaded with have the advantage of doing it all automatically, if that is what adds the dimension of convenience.’
A few days back I was introduced to these charming little devices that fitted in the palm of my hand, had an attractive design with a textured bottom. Not that the design mattered so much as the ability to encrypt and set up a password… but then we live in a world where people love everything that has a certain style surrounding them.
‘They’ve launched automatic desktop hard drives as well,’ I added with a twinkle, and then went on, ‘they work perfectly as high capacity backup, that could be up to 8TB, for your PC and Mac and have password protection with hardware encryption too.’
‘Nice,’ he replied, ‘this suits my needs. And I’m sure I will not be offending the political powers of the country as well.’
I then thought of quoting Khalid Wani, Director – Content Solutions Business, India, Middle East and Africa, Western Digital, who spoke rather enthusiastically about design that had the power of personal touch to our digital life. He told me that their “team has gone ahead of the curve with elevating design quotient on the new My Passport and My Book drives to enhance user-experience.” He also added that “the newly reimagined design language is meant to amplify our personal connection to data. As the data use is drastically evolving and has become an integral part of our lives, we aim to focus on reiterating the importance of personalizing data solutions that excite people while preserving and cherishing their precious memories.”
Even Yves Béhar, founder and Principal Designer at fuse project agrees when he said that “the way we use data is changing; it’s becoming much more of a personal commodity, something we value. Western Digital lies at the intersection of our physical life and the digital world, and we wanted to create a quality aesthetic that symbolizes this intersection.”
To tell you the truth I have used one of these portable hard drives and am not suffering from any sleepless nights because this is one kind of storage that will never be affected by sudden announcements by the government. No unforeseen accidents and forgetfulness is ever going to leave me fuming and tense about losses any more.
Those who aren’t aware of Western Digital must know that this company is ‘an industry-leading provider of storage technologies and solutions that enable people to create, leverage, experience and preserve data’ and their products are marketed under the HGST, SanDisk and WD brands to OEMs, distributors, resellers, cloud infrastructure providers and consumers.
The My Passport hard drives are protected by a 2-year limited warranty and are available at select retailers and distributors around the country. My Passport drives have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of Rs 7,980(1TB). My Book desktop hard drives are protected by a 2-year limited warranty and are available at select retailers and distributors. My Book drives have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price starting at Rs 13,050 (3TB).
Coming back to the currency hullabaloo going on in the country let me just add that we need to be focused more on the data that we create than on ill-gotten wealth that some of us generate. The former can be stored well and retrieved without ever facing the risk of being ousted from circulation… unlike the latter that may at some point make us stand in long queues in front of banks to get a validation! I guess it is good to remember that the passport to safe storage is a reality today only if you know what the things are worthy of being stored.
