Everyone is on a shooting spree these days. Shooting is a fun thing to do and believe me I have seen people shoot in the most unlikely of places and at the most unlikely time with the most unlikely angle and yet smile. Some say that shooting in the dark is getting easier. Shooting while on the move is a distinct possibility. Shooting with one hand doesn’t need hours of practice. Shooting is as real as technology will allow. And I mean shooting the perfect picture.

By the way, it is no longer essential to carry heavy equipment to shoot well as one can do it perfectly with the newest smartphones that come loaded with technology that are ready to do all the slog work for you. This is what the new Vivo V9 does… and it does pretty well. All one needs to do is to pull the smartphone out like one sees the cowboys do in those old Westerns and the 6.3 inch display will ensure that one never really goes wrong with the composition. How difficult is it to pull out speedily a device that weighs barely 150 gms and then, after all, you are seeing a lot more than the subject and a bit of cropping can only make the shot as good as one has imagined it to be.

I can tell you that the camera in the Vivo V9 is a lot smarter than you’d imagine. The AI in the processor has gender detection, an automatic scene detect capture, portrait lighting effect, and palm capture besides the advantages of ultra HD, a live photo bokeh mode, and a shot refocus. By the way, this smartphone allows a user to shoot professional slo-mo, time-lapse, beauty enhanced pictures, panoramas, a range of filters, AR stickers…

‘Wait! Wait! Not so fast please…’ I can hear some readers shout as did a friend of mine who followed it up with a query: ‘I did not understand what a live bokeh mode and a shot refocus means.’

Well, you simply click a picture with the bokeh mode on and you get the sort of output that I loved when I used a 50mm F2.5 lens with a wide aperture. The bokeh isn’t like one of those forced fade-aways with an abruptness that always jarred. The shot refocus gives a user an opportunity to shift the focus and save multiple shots with different parts of the same shot in sharp focus. This is magical.

The magic of the camera doesn’t end with this. The Vivo V9 has dual rear cameras (16MP + 5MP) and the LED flash allows for more light to deliver high quality images even in low-light conditions. If this comes as a surprise, I can imagine your smile as I write that the revolutionary V9 also features a 24MP selfie camera, which uses AI Face Beauty to deliver astonishingly clear, beautiful selfies. I completely agree with Kent Cheng, CEO, Vivo India when he said during the launch: “With the class-leading design and camera capabilities of Vivo V9, we have once again delivered a product that is high on innovation and quality. We are confident that our latest flagship will set new benchmarks in the smartphone industry and further solidify our leadership position in the market.”

Shooting well isn’t everything in a smartphone and so it makes a lot of sense to add that this phone has a 19:9 FullView™ Display 2.0 and an impressive 90% screen-to-body ratio. The bezels on the smartphone are kept at a bare minimum of just 1.75 mm that makes V9 compact in design as a traditional 5.5-inch phone but offers an incredible 6.3-inch display.

This phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 CPU, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 64 GB of storage with a possibility to add another 256 GB of space, a 3260 mAh battery that charges reasonably speedily, and supports a fingerprint scanner, both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wifi, bluetooth 4.2, a dual SIM and an extra slot for a micro SD, and audio that pleases the mind.

The Vivo V9 Smart Engine prioritizes processing and storage resources to provide a fluid and optimized experience. In addition to ensuring smooth operation and save power, the AI Smart Engine can accurately predict user’s next task and launch favorite apps 20% faster. The V9’s AI Attention Sensing also keeps disruption to a minimum by automatically reducing the volume of message alerts, incoming calls and alarms. Who says our smartphones aren’t getting smarter?

A couple of weeks back I was in Mumbai for the launch and had written a poem of what I thought the phone would have. Of course, the contents of the poem were based on the online grapevines and I must say that the poem captures the truth rather accurately. I had written this poem on the 22nd of March and I’m sure you will love reading it her though you may have read it on my Instagram profile as well.

More in 6.3 inches

Sizes in inches have ruled our minds
In Freud to politics perpetual grinds
Where 56 inches still struggles with life
A 6.3 inch display ends that strife!
The Vivo V9, that is yet in wraps
News bits on the net are doing their laps
They say this phone is easy to use and hold
No cramped spaces means display is bold
They say the phone is like a million dollar smile
With swiping gestures giving it a style
4 GB RAM on Android 8.1 is great
And a 19:9 aspect ratio makes a worthy bait
Vertically positioned dual cam set-up in the rear
Has 16 and 5 mp sensors placed with care
The HDR mode snaps up oohs! and aahs!
A 24 megapixel front cam nullifies all baahs!
AI pervades the phone in many ways
Giving it selfie-conscious youngster sways
AI optimizes performance to the core
Adding to its tech-savvy score
Yes, FM radio, expandable card slot,
Dual-band wifi, and the USB lot
With a 3260 mAh battery add to its power
The phone, as I said, is a tech shower!
They say the phone weighs just 150 grams
And there is more in taste-laden drams
Swipe the bars at the bottom for app-hops
Innovations, let me say, has no stops!

Now, don’t ever say that 6.3 inches are less
But if you ask me the price, I’ll have to guess
I think around 22 thousand should be fine
The phone is surely a futuristic wine!

Well, so much for poetic thoughts that came before the actual launch… and let me add here that the Vivo V9 is no less than a well written poem. Holding the phone in my hands was more than just a sensual wriggle and there were times I wished the company gifted me one to keep. I’m sure this review gives a perfect view of a smartphone that aims to give you a perfect shot!
