A Mega Sunday

How will I describe a ‘mega’ Sunday?
Lots of things to eat? No.
Getting up late and being lazy the entire day? No.
Mall hopping? No.
Winning a few more prizes on twitter? No.

This Sunday has become MEGA because it felt great bringing the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 & 6.3, my Nikon D5100, the movie-maker on my laptop, a few bags and ideas brain-stormed with Specky, and writing this exciting post together… a techie master-chef sort of Sunday, I’d say. We discussed ideas, shot frames on the DSLR and the Mega phones, did voice overs, experimented with themes on Adobe Premier Elements 7.0 as well as the Windows Movie-Maker, and created FOUR short films that made us finally smile!

Let’s list out a few of the features of these phones. Features that make a difference to the smartphone experience.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a 162.6 x 82.4 x 9 mm (6.40 x 3.24 x 0.35 in) phone that weighs 182 g (6.42 oz). The Android OS, v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) and a CPU that is Dual-core 1.4 GHz with a TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution that is 540 x 960 pixels, and a size that is 5.8 inches is what makes the phone a marvel for those who want to read a lot of ebooks on it or are fond of gaming and watching movies!

The phone uses a microSD and the memory can be expanded to up to 64 GB. It’s internal 8 GB storage, 1.5 GB RAM is enough for any user today. The primary camera has 8 MP, 3264 x 2448 pixels, autofocus, LED flash and the secondary camera is 1.9 MP. A few other features like Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, a video capability for 1080p@30fps, and a battery that is a superb Li-Ion 2600 mAh are unbeatable today. The phone also has an MP3/WAV/eAAC+/AC3/FLAC player, an Organizer, a image/video editor, a Document viewer, the power to Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Picasa, the capability for Voice memo/dial/commands, and the simply adorable Predictive text input.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is a 167.6 x 88 x 8 mm (6.60 x 3.46 x 0.31 in)

Phone that weighs 199 g (7.02 oz) and has an Android OS, v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) with a Dual-core 1.7 GHz Krait, an SC-LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, 720 x 1280 pixels, and has a screen that is 6.3 inches. The phone uses a microSD & has an expandable memory up to 64 GB, an internal 8/16 GB storage, 1.5 GB RAM. The primary camera is 8 MP, 3264 x 2448 pixels, autofocus, LED flash and the Secondary camera is 1.9 MP. Features include Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, Video 1080p@30fps, and a battery that is a Li-Ion 3200 mAh.

But hey, we all know that these are great features. What is important is that a large-screen phone serves both as a phone and as a tablet. Students will find it with an added oomph and glam, housewives can do some rapid calculations, professionals can watch previews of presentations without having to squint and squirm, the elderly can carry it with them and use it without their trembling fingers messing up calls or short notes that they may want to take. As I was writing this part, Specky came up and said, ‘Why don’t you click a few photographs that tell this story?’

‘Photographs to tell a story?’

‘Yes, different people carry different sort of bags and the bags have different things,’ she said, ‘for instance, an artist’s bag will surely have no need for cosmetics or jewellery, or a bag of a female student may not need things that an executive will carry.’

‘I got your point,’ I replied, and we busied selecting the right sort of bag and deciding what a particular person may want to have it the bag. Did we do some guess work here? No. We called up an artist friend and asked him what he has in his bag… and accordingly we collected the relevant things for the picture. The pictures that we took are arranged below… and you’ll agree that the Galaxy Mega phone fits any sort of bag. This just means that the Mega from Samsung is a rather multi-talented right young phone!
