Why did my wife and I walk out of Akshara Theatre today?
by Arvind Passey on Dec 16, 2010 • 7:05 PM 19 CommentsNo, there wasn’t any critical global issue brewing up as we walked out of Akshara
theatre today minutes before ‘The Vagina Monologues’ (a play that we very much
wanted to see) was to begin. However, our leaving the venue had everything to do
with a lot of irresponsibly fanciful, wild, and whirling words that one reads on
the website of breakthrough.tv… though most of those words must’ve been put
there to imply serious intent.
Breakthrough claiming to be ‘a global, human rights organization that uses the
power of media, pop culture, and community mobilization to inspire people to take
bold action for dignity, equality, and justice’ actually emerged to be true in
ways that the organizers may never have expected. For instance, here I am writing
this piece for my blog after having stood and watched an absolute massacre of
‘dignity, equality, and justice’ at Akshara today.
Let me recount some of the incidents that aught to be reviewed by Breakthrough
management before they even think about organizing such an event again in the
future.
1. There were more than double the number of people that Akshara could possibly
accommodate in their open air amphitheater. Even a cursory glance told me that a
majority of those present were twenty somethings more attracted to the drinks and
food than by any zeal for critical issues like ‘violence against women, sexuality
and HIV/AIDS, and immigrant rights and racial justice’. Was anyone monitoring the
number of invites being distributed… and to whom?
2. Even as we were leaving I could see at least 50 well-meaning people stranded
outside the shut main gate… with more joining this motley crowd. There was no
one responsible enough to explain organizational inadequacy to these people… I
wonder what PR Breakthrough was aiming at! In fact, there was another twenty
something girl who claimed to be from their PR agency who told me with a distinct
slur in her tone: ‘Our job is to call the media. You talk to someone else.’ Well,
someone please tell her that media boundaries have broadened to include a a lot of
serious bloggers… and the internet is possibly read more than three dismissive
lines in a remote corner of a supplement of a daily newspaper!
3. We did manage to get inside the amphitheater and one kind soul even offered
half a seat to my wife and i chose to squat on the aisle. Even this was not to be
though… one of the organizers (yet another 20-something female) came up to me
and rather brusquely asked me (and a few others) to get up and leave. This we did.
Promptly. Your staff in India had successfully managed to ‘transform my heart and
mind’! Social issues are my concern… and as I left I wondered if Breakthrough
was really serious about their vision and mission. They didn’t appear to be.
4. Our car was parked in the RML Hospital parking and as we came out and drove away
I noticed a platoon of harried traffic cops deflating the tyres of the cars of all those hypocrites who were inside Akshara! Who were these people who deliberately added to traffic woes by leaving their cars on a busy road at peak commuting hours? Who were these people who fancied themselves as saviours of the suffering population and
protectors of human rights but did not want to pay Rs 10 for legal parking? I
wouldn’t trust them.
So far as ‘The Vagina Monologues’ is concerned, we will surely wait for a ticketed
show. So far as Breakthrough is concerned, I wish they learn to manage their
events better.
If you’ve read so far, I think it will be fine if I mention a few suggestions as
well:
1. Even Barbican in London stages a lot of plays where entry is free… but when
they say that entry is ‘first come, first serve’ they allot seat numbers before
the show and I’ve yet to see a mismanaged event there. Therefore, go ahead and
invite as many people as you want for the drinks and eats BUT ask invitees to take
a numbered entry ticket from a specified place at a specified time slot. This can
be half an hour before the event begins and at the venue itself.
2. If I were a part of the organizers in such a situation I’d have desisted from
asking people to leave the amphitheater and watch a beamed version outside. After
all the real thing is the real thing! Instead, I’d have announced and requested
all below-thirty guests to graciously offer their seats to all the above-thirty
guests. It is much easier for the younger ones to squat on the ground just below
the stage!
3. If you claim to be a social activist, your job doesn’t get over by just
announcing that cars illegally parked need to be moved to a valid parking lot. You
MUST have volunteers ensuring that no laws are broken by YOUR guests!
4. If I were you, I’d look for a better PR agency… or at least inform them to
train and mentor their executives to be more responsible and responsive!
5. In the event of such a catastrophic mismanagement, do consider releasing an
apology.
As I write these words a new day has begun. It is half past twelve in the night
and it is now time for me to upload this piece and sleep until dawn!

I agree that Event Management is an art but Public Management is a science and it is more so in our country as the supply is always more than the demand.
We got to evolve that MIND SET by conditioning the people of our country and it is a Herculean task so we as educators have bigger challenges lying ahead.
Lets gear up for the task to bring out that much desired attitudinal change !!!

We indians need to change our attitude 'thoda sa adjust karlo bhaisaab' and 'sab chalta hai', which is the main cause of such events.

The Event Mgmnt Industry is in a mess Arvind, the 20+ are recruited as hosts and hostesses for the day and do not possess neither work ethics nor mannerisms. The guys are young MBAs, and are inefficient .Except for Wizcraft , I am yet to see mature honchos. The honchos are big time gluttons and would not listen to a senior member too.
I remember a man who runs an event management team spoke eloquently on physically challenged but refused to take them into consideration although he got an assent from a leading MNC to conduct an event for them.
Event Management by unprofessionals is an eye sore…

Yeah! Arvind , I am also agree with you over such like issues, on the name of dignity, joy ,
over the name of enjoyment of freedom and liberty we wast lot of money and our time. It is clearly against the human values when you know the still 33% people of this country living below poverty line and there are lot other alarming issues in this country.

This is another one on 'Event mis-management'. It is high time that we Indians realize the importance of selection of a good event management agency. Moreover, the attitude and the values being depicted in the event / play / show must also trickle down to how your hosts or hostesses are behaving. Ironically, most of the event management agency owners come from hospitality industry….

Seems it has become a norm in India…to become famous or garner more attention…do wrong things…do they realise how much it affect the individual or the country image as whole…

Hi…
Totally agree with your point of view. The guys managing the show have ensured…that no media will turn up at any event they organize next. I won't touch them with a barge pole.
And you are right, the web is a stronger and more extensive forum than print or TV…or both put together…(how can we forget "wikileaks")
I am now Incharge of Special Video content at NDTV convergence…and the reach of the web is immense…
All I can say is…Anybody who has read your article..won't give any more breakthroughs to "breakthrough"!
Warm Regards

Hi Arvind,
I was also in the venue. I think you must have noticed that there were two big AV screens in the open lawn to air the Monologue to the spectators who could not accomodate themselves to the amphitheatre. The open lawn was also equiped with chairs. I think this was a superb arrangement. As far as the parking is concerned that was not something we should expect from the NGO Breakthrough. But surely it should be ticketed event next time so that it helps in raising funds for the NGO and also keep a tab on the number of guests.
Kanupriya as for Breakthrough it is not an event management company rather they have conceived great campaigns like 'Bell Bajao" (www.bellbjao.org) -you must check this website.

Well Swapan
The AV screens aren't denied in the blog… it is as much a fact as are all other things mentioned. I have also browsed through the website you've mentioned… will surely write on that, but later.
Do read my piece on 'irreverence'… would love to read your comments on it.
Thanks for visiting passey.info.

Hi Sir,
You have always inspired me and been a role model for the way you deal with 'situations'. Nice read, may be this will help people think more when it comes to offering services (paid/ free).

Agree with you totally..
Especially on the PR front. Its time the PR people look beyond Media … my basics of PR taught me that it was communicating to different audiences. Its time for young PR professionals to go back to the basics.
The event management company should brief the PR agency/ personnel and other agencies working on the Event….

Hi Arvind,
Thanks for your email.
Consumer in India is a toma** and its time to make a change. I am accumulating instances so that the same can be used for a story– Is consumer really the king? But this is for future.
Meanwhile i passed on the link to my colleagues in the metro team. Hope they were in touch with you.

I'm really glad that you wrote this article. Being a PR professional, India's standards are not just appalling, but also depressing since we cut such sorry figures.
Did you receive any response from Breakthrough? I'm going to tweet about this.

hey, Arvind
it was indeed a nice read and I agree with your POV on the lack of planning, which is becoming a standard in India. CWG was a glaring example!
Enjoy reading your blog!
keep'em coming.
Take care.

A colleague of mine who attended the event too was upset with the way it was managed. You have rightly said that many attend such events for drinks and food rather than for art but such is the state of cultural capital of the nation

Mr. Passey, I just saw your blog and was really sorry that you had to walk out because of the organisational chaos of Breakthrough Events' production of Vagina Monologues. Do come to one of our own productions at Akshara. You will have a wonderful experience! We are resuming our series on Literary Theatre where we dramatise stories from contemporary Indian literature, as well as talks, film screenings, music, poetry readings and of course, conventional plays. We do serve mint tea and nibblies after our events, but everyone is extremely civilised! Hope to see you.

Mr Passey, I just came back from Akshara and it was a delightful experience. Your piece is so scathing that it seems its personal! I wish you were objective, gathered the facts and presented in a palatable way. Sorry, I think we must express in a more matured way. Hope you post this comment!

Thank you for reading an article that was written months back. I DO NOT delete comments.
The observations in the post are objective and based on what had happened that day. I’m sure Akshara is a nice place… I’m sure the others in that post are equally nice humans… it is possible they have all improved because of one ‘scathing’ post, as you choose to call it.
